Expansion - History
Having just begun to establish themselves at UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall of 1998, the initial members of Theta Nu Xi were contacted by interested women at N.C. State University. At this point, the sisters realized that not only were other campuses in need of an organization such as Theta Nu Xi, but that there were other women out there who were looking for a diverse sisterhood. The sisters at UNC-CH began considering how to spread the message of Theta Nu Xi to other campuses and beyond.
Having created a sorority literally from scratch, the sisters now began developing a process of expansion from scratch. Under the visionary guidance of Anna Lamadrid, two new chapters of Theta Nu Xi were founded in the spring semester of 1999 - one at N.C. State University and one at UNC-Greensboro. The three groups of women named themselves the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma chapters, and thus the notion of sorority expansion was born.
In the spring of 2000, chapters at Duke University and Utah State University were founded. By the spring of 2001, chapters had been founded at Georgia State University, Virginia Tech University, Texas A & M - Commerce, and the University of Utah. In three short years of expansion, Theta Nu Xi had grown to eight chapters in five different states! Furthermore, a new level of membership had been created within the organization - graduate and professional women. By the spring of 2001, four women had joined Theta Nu Xi at this level.
Since then, the sorority has been growing rapidly, through word-of-mouth and our web presence. We are excited that so many women out there are passionate about creating a diverse sisterhood.
