Happy Founders' Day!

To recognize the occasion, here are some words from one of our Founders.

On April 11, 1997 a change in the old order occurred at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The founding of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority by seven women who were diverse from each other challenged the old order of Greek Life based upon race and division. Change was challenged but accepted slowly. Now, twelve years later, the Sorority boasts undergraduate and graduate chapters all over the country and a membership of 850 women. While we celebrate this unprecedented growth this Founder’s Day, we must also stop and reassess our individual and our collective commitment to the ideals of Theta Nu Xi, mainly leadership, scholarship, service, sisterhood, multiculturalism, and the fight against racism and poverty and realign ourselves with that mission.

On January 20, 2009 a change occurred in our nation and in the world but that does not mean that this nation or that the world is somehow now fairer than it was. Theta Nu Xi has long represented the one nation President Obama often talks about. Because we have a deep understanding that we are all created equal, the privilege and the responsibility of the Theta Woman is greater than that of the average woman. We must stand for being more than a diverse group of women. We must be our Sister’s keeper. We must seek to learn, grow and change. We must hold ourselves to the highest standard of performance and integrity at the universities where we learn and in our professional environments where we work. We must expect and demand the best for ourselves, for each other and for our beloved Sorority. We must serve our communities and help those who are less fortunate than we are. We must always try to act out of an interest of love and of faith, not of fear. We must be on the front lines in the fight against racism and poverty. We must be the ones who get it done when everyone else says it is impossible. We must give hope to those around us. And we must always rise to bridge the many gaps in our world.
